First Thursday + First Friday in June

First Thursday at Oblation Papers & Press

Come see me this Thursday, June 2 at Oblation from 4 - 6pm, where I'll be drawing with my Citation II manual typewriter and you can utilize their Public Typing Station Yourself!

See how I work, keep me company and snag a flier for the June 25th festivities, where I've teamed up with Oblation to celebrate International Typewriter Day!  Stay tuned for details.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 25th, 1 - 4pm!

First Friday at Bare Bones Cafe

Join me and DJs Lorna Dune & Keith Sweaty as we celebrate my opening reception at Bare Bones Cafe on Belmont, this Friday, June 3 from 6 - 9pm! I'm thrilled to share works from 2014 through last week, as well as limited edition prints.

Most importantly, I will be donating 30% of my art sales to my favorite fledgling nonprofit, Public Annex--this is an organization very close to my heart, with an aim to break down systemic barriers that prohibit marginalized populations from inclusivity by building a community around accessible farming and art programming.

Just a few of the available prints for sale this Friday! Counter-clockwise from left:
Vessel, Kyle, Top-Heavy, Untitled, Automatic, Your Shadow's Shadow, Valentine, Empath

I will be running a sale on some of my small prints and will be sharing hot-off-the-press large-scale giclées of my latest typewriter-drawings.  I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to support my colleagues and this essential organization. Many thanks to Bare Bones for generously waiving their commission fee.

First Friday at Café Lulu

This is the part where I wish I could tear myself in two! The epic June Bayview Gallery Night also falls on Friday, June 3 and my large scale stamp and ink drawings as well as large-scale giclées of my typewriter drawings are on view during the night of the celebration (and beyond to mid-July!).  So Milwaukee, let me live vicariously through you and check out all of the artists and venues participating in BVGN 2016! I'll be there in spirit.

Who Were You, Who You Were - Gratitude!

Though it was a short trip, I had a great time in Wisconsin and was so grateful to have spent time with a handful of wonderful people I love and adore.

Café Lulu is always my first stop in MKE, and as always, I'm so delighted to see my extended/chosen Lulu family. Again, I'm so thrilled to show my work in a space that means so much to me and is filled to the brim with people I care about.  Thank you for still making perfect rhubarb pie, and special thanks to the bartenders for maintaining my bloody mary intake and helping us with the install.

Check out Ash's fabulous learning kits for the young'uns: Little Goat Learning

I'm extremely grateful to my dear pal Ash who helped me install (twice...we hung it too low the first time) and for my dad who helped on the second install.  What on Earth would I have done without you both? Another special thanks to Anna & Bill (and Theo) and Jessica for being great and wonderful sleepover hosts.

A special message to Rina, Waldek, Leslie and Lynn: I can't express enough how grateful I am for your attending my opening reception.  You have had a powerful influence on what I do today, as you introduced me to printmaking itself through intaglio, drawing, book arts, color theory, and lithography. Thank you for still being a part of my life and for your kind words and advice.  I'm glad to know you.

I'm just astonished by all of the incredible people in my life who continue to support me and therefore my art. I'm forever in your debt and I love you.

The three achromats in this show, made using permanent marker and a slow build of hand-drawing triangles, the center one accompanied by rubbing alcohol.

If you were unable to make it to the reception, the show runs through mid-July, 2016.  Please see Café Lulu's site for hours, menu, and more information.  If you are interested in purchasing any of these pieces, please contact me directly: redlumlehcar at gmail dot com

Until next time, Milwaukee!

Detail Who Were You, Who You Were

Like I've said this work is very personal, and though I've been afforded the privilege, and very much enjoy, hiding behind the processes I employ, I may eventually have to refer to the narrative in this work. Not today, though!

Until Soon. Hope you have a fabulous day.

Unrevealed: In Progress

"Lawrence", 2015, typewriter drawing on Rives BFK

In this series of portraits the subject's identity is obscured either by natural visual distortion or by the purposeful withholding of certain features, a result of my fascination with the way in which facial features can mutate into erratic and confusing landscapes. As my heavy handed drawing techniques in traditional media and linework urge cartoonish renderings, the sense of veracity that comes with portraiture was elusive.

Using my Sears Citation II manual typewriter as a drawing tool and a photograph of the subject as a framework, I challenged my instinct to rely on caricature but also found myself resistant to the ideals of traditional portraiture. Rather than seeking and depicting a blank truth, where facial features and body parts appear as expected, I was compelled to complete an exercise in neglecting the firmly cemented visual images in my head. Navigating through this imagery using this cumbersome yet delicate drawing tool within the delineated contours of the photographs allowed me to scatter my focus, working in one compartment at a time and allowing the images to form like sediment collecting, a slow build of overlapping marks and feeds through the typewriter until each was complete. Focusing solely on the difference in values and angles and not the expectations of visual truth, I was led back to the fundamental task of drawing what’s there.

Unrevealed at Rush Mor Records

I'm so excited to return to my homeland for two whole weeks! I'm honored to show my latest typewriter drawings at Milwaukee's longest running record shop (and my favorite) Rush Mor as part of Bayview Gallery Night.  Since it's summer in Milwaukee, and the city becomes exponentially awesome, the opening reception also coincides with Rollout, sponsored by Rush Mor, South Shore Cyclery and Church of 2 Wheels--a family-friendly BVGN bike tour (see all the details in the link). Yours truly will have a *super-secret* limited edition typewriter-drawn poster for sale honoring the ride! Can't wait to see you there!

Obscured Identities

This latest series of small typewriter-drawings is the result of my fascination with the strange ways the face mutates into remarkable and confusing landscapes, making for anonymous, unidentifiable portraits. The features that are cemented in our minds to appear a certain way transform and shift as natural distortion and the absence of certain features challenge what we are used to seeing. Working small is so satisfying; I'm learning to become less heavy-handed.
